Michael Jamin, showrunner, screenwriter, TV writer

You know there’s something in your life worth writing about, but every time you try, it either feels shapeless, self-indulgent, or too close to the bone. You have memories, moments, people, and pain—but not yet a story. And when you read writers who can turn ordinary life into something honest, sharp, and impossible to put down, you wonder, How?

You’re not alone. The difference between a memory and a story isn’t talent or trauma—it’s knowing how to find what the story is really about, shape it with structure, and make a reader want to know what happens next.

Mining Your Life for Stories With Michael Jamin

In this live, 3-hour workshop, Michael will show you how to find one story from your life, figure out what it’s really about, and shape it into something a reader actually wants to follow.

When: Saturday, April 18th, at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern

Hour 1: What to Write

How to identify the one memory, relationship, or moment that has enough emotional weight to become a real story — so you stop wasting time on material that matters only to you.
How to tell the difference between a story that is merely autobiographical and one that feels original, authentic, and moving — so your work starts from stronger raw material.
How to use lists of memories, weaknesses, and “firsts” to uncover story-worthy material — so you can generate better ideas with more confidence and less guessing.
How to find the “meat on the bone” in a life experience — so you can choose a story with real emotional stakes instead of a scene, anecdote, or clever premise that runs out of steam.

Hour 2: How to Write It

How to figure out what your story is really about beneath the raw facts — so the piece feels deeper, sharper, and more professionally shaped.
How to ask the right “why” questions to uncover the real stakes, obstacle, and emotional story — so your writing stops skimming the surface and starts hitting something universal.
How to focus on rootable emotional stakes like redemption, self-worth, and broken relationships — so your audience cares about the story for the right reasons.
How to apply the same story logic Michael uses in television to personal material — so you can shape a memory into a story people actually want to follow.

Hour 3: Let’s Do It Together

How to start applying these ideas to your own material in real time with Michael — so you leave with more than inspiration and begin turning theory into actual work.
How to pressure-test your story idea against professional story questions — so you can quickly see whether it holds up or needs to go deeper.
How to spot what’s off-story and what belongs — so your draft feels more disciplined, intentional, and worth finishing.
How to begin shaping one story only you can tell — so you walk away with a clearer path toward work that feels more honest, original, and dramatically alive.

No Hype Guarantee

Mining Your Life is a live, working session—not a fluff “inspiration talk.” If you show up live, stay for the full 3 hours, take notes, and participate when asked you will approach comedy in a whole new light. If you honestly feel you didn’t get tools you can use to make your scripts and stories better, email my team within 24 hours and we’ll refund your ticket.

I can’t promise you’ll suddenly uncover the perfect story overnight. I can promise to show you the same story principles and structural process I use to turn lived experience into material that feels honest, compelling, and worth reading.

This guarantee covers the workshop itself and your learning experience—not specific career outcomes. I can’t promise you’ll sell a show or get staffed. I can promise to teach you the tools I’ve used to make a living as a comedy writer for almost three decades.

FAQs

Common Questions

Q: Will there be a replay or recording?
A: No. This run of Mining Your Life for Stories is live only. There will be no replay or recording sold afterward. If you want the material, you need to be there in the Zoom room on the date of the workshop.
Q: What if I buy a ticket but can’t make it live?
A: This is a live workshop with limited seats. If you can't make it at the last minute, we can't resell your ticket. If you’re not reasonably sure you can attend at the scheduled time, it’s better to skip this round.
Q: Who is this workshop for?

Mining Your Life for Stories is not just for memoir writers. It’s for any writer who wants to turn lived experience into material that feels honest, specific, and worth following. This includes:

  • Screenwriters looking for stronger, more original story material
  • Novelists, essayists, and playwrights drawing from personal experience
  • Writers who have memories, moments, or relationships they know matter—but haven’t yet shaped into story
  • Anyone who wants their writing to feel more emotionally true and less generic
Q: Will this workshop help me find a story worth telling?
That’s the goal. Michael will show you how to identify one story from your life that has real emotional weight, figure out what it’s really about, and begin shaping it into something a reader wants to follow. He can’t promise you’ll leave with a finished piece, but you will leave with a much clearer way to find stronger material and work on it with intention.
Q: Will I get personal feedback on my story or pages?
Not in the sense of a full written critique. This is a live workshop, and Michael will teach for roughly two hours, take questions throughout, and then spend the final portion in an interactive workshop/Q&A format. You’ll have the chance to learn from how he thinks through story problems in real time, but this is not the same as private one-on-one feedback on your pages.
Q: What do I need to bring or prepare?

You’ll get the most out of the workshop if you bring:

  • Something to take notes with (digital or old-school)
  • A quiet place, headphones, and a stable internet connection
  • You’re not required to share your work out loud, but you’ll get more value if you participate.
Q: How late can I sign up?
To keep the workshop manageable and interactive, seats are capped. Once we hit capacity, the checkout will close and no additional tickets will be sold. If you want in, it’s better to grab your seat now rather than take your chances. The last time we hosted this event, tickets were completely sold out.
