Do TV writers get fan mail? In my 26 year career, I’ve only once gotten fan mail. That was on a show called “Out of Practice, which starred Henry Winkler, Ty Burrell, who later became Phil from Modern Family, Stockard Channing, Chris Gorham, and Paul Marshall. My partner and I wrote an episode where the mother character comes to terms with the fact that her daughter is gay. The episode was called Key Ingredients. It was a lovely show, really funny show. And so the mother was watching this at home with her own daughter, who was gay. And apparently watching this episode helped them grow closer together. It kind of brought them to tears and they were really touched by that. So they wound up writing me and my partner some fan mail and in the fan mail, the mom included this, a stained glass shield from a university which she made herself. It was really lovely and I’ve kept it forever cause I was really touched by that.

For bonus points, what university does this shield represent? You can leave your answer in the comment section. For more on how to become a television writer and how to break into the business, you can like, comment, subscribe, and follow me @MichaelJaminwriter.
